Edward L. Rensmann is organising an Oxford-style debate

How should arbitrators be paid: by the hour, or by the amount at stake?

As part of the Berlin Dispute Resolution Days and together with Eleanor Scogings (LCIA) and Duncan Gorst (Osborne Clarke), our Hamburg-based colleague and YIAG (Young International Arbitration Group) Regional Representative Edward L. Rensmann is organising an Oxford-style debate, putting that question to the test.

📅 Wednesday, 30 September 2026 | 17:30
📍 Osborne Clarke, Berlin

A panel consisting of Nina Melzer, Justin Friedrich Krahé, Isabel Lightbody and Anna Hoffmann will go head to head, arguing either for the hourly-rate model, as under the LCIA system, or for the ad valorem approach, calculating fees by reference to the amount in dispute. The debate will be followed by drinks and networking.

Registration is open. Link in the post below.

Calling all emerging arbitration practitioners! YIAG and Osborne Clarke invite you to attend an exciting Oxford-style debate taking place as part of Berlin Dispute Resolution Days 2026.

The debate will be centred around a key question: how should arbitrator’s fees be calculated? Two teams will each make a case for the competing viewpoints, with one defending the ad valorem approach, and the other arguing in favour of the hourly-rate model.

Following the debate, there will be time to mingle and network with fellow attendees.
